Chapter Eighteen

Weirdo or not, Anne was thankful that Reid showed up to help once again. They'd managed to work in harmony all day yesterday.

While she put together pieces for the Hann wedding, he'd waited on the drop-in customers and actually arranged several artistic bouquets for the hospital. The man could even make beautiful bows. This left her more confused about Reid's multifaceted personality than before. Didn't sensitivity go along with artistic talent? She'd always thought so, but she might have to readjust her thinking.

She only hoped today went as smoothly.

It was 4 AM, still dark outside, and Anne stifled a yawn guaranteed to pop a jaw.

Reid walked in looking totally refreshed. A lack of conscience or sweet innocence – that was the question.

“Anne, the van is loaded with everything for the wedding except the one you're working on. Anything else I should do to get us ready to depart?”

“Knock, knock?” A young voice yelled from the door into the parking lot.

“Come on in, Judy,” yelled Anne in response.

Anne gave a final twist to the ribbon streamers and settled the bride's bouquet in its protective box. When she turned to see why her normally jabbering teen helper was silent, she found Judy gawking at Reid. The poor girl tugged at her paint-splotched shirt and tried to smooth her just-climbed-out-of-bed hairdo. She'd be reaming out Anne later for not warning her that a major hunk would be on the premises. One glance at Reid's tall, handsome figure, and Anne knew exactly what drew Judy's attention.

Sorry, sweetie.

“Judy, this is Reid Derringer. Reid, meet Judy Garland Henderson. She's a budding young vocal artist – like her namesake – and she's currently singing the lead in the youth theater's production of Sound of Music. You'll have to go to the CY Theatre for one of their performances.”

Reid smiled and took Judy's hand in both of his. “I'll certainly put that on my social calendar.”

If flesh and bone could melt just from a glance, Judy would be a puddle on the floor. Anne coughed to cover a laugh. She'd be the puddle right next to Judy if she didn't pull herself together.

What a contradiction she was when it came to Reid Derringer. Like a petal-plucked flower, she went from “I like him.” to “I like him not.” with great regularity.

“Okay, team. Let's roll. The sun will be rising soon, and we must get all this stuff set up and ready for the bride to make her sunrise walk down the aisle.”

Anne handed Reid the final box. “Judy, hold down the fort. We should be back in a couple hours. And thanks so much for coming in soooooo early on a Saturday. I really appreciate your help.”

Never taking her eyes from the man standing beside Anne, Judy nodded. A besotted grin curved her pink lips.

Anne shook her head, grabbed Reid by the arm and turned him toward the back door. She leaned in close so only he could hear her words. “Let's go before my helper swoons and falls into an adoring faint.
